Backstory Continued as promised:
Sou is a monstrosity of a phase spider who phases in and out of the Ethereal plane at will. This is especially useful in battle and there were many battles to come soon, for Sou would now have precious cargo to guard. Sou had just made a bargain with the great bronze dragon Yhani, who had grown tired of protecting the thing itself. Too many wished to possess it and the constant harassment was getting to be a bit much and incredibly inconvenient. Sou thought that sounded wonderful, it was not often your meals came to you instead of having to hunt them down. A bargain was struck and a great “pretending” planned.
Sou sat in wait until the next adventurers came looking for the item, and while the adventurers battled Yhani, Sou would “sneak” in and steal the magic thing away. Yhani would allow the adventurers to notice this and allow them to escape to follow Sou. Sou would lead them away, far enough away that they would not bother Yhani anymore. Once they were away, Sou would turn to attack them and have a nice meal, and some leftovers besides. She would let one escape so they could go back and tell others that Yhani no longer had the magic thing and in the future they would have to go to Sou to try and get it. The plan was sure to succeed, Sou was already drooling at the thought of all of the nice juicy meals coming her way.
Process
I wanted to challenge myself to paint a spider as I have always had a fear of spiders. The white plastic 3D printed spider didn’t cause me any issues to start with but I knew I would be unable to hold it and finish painting it if I tried to make it too realistic right off the bat. I did a little more research into the types of spiders there are in rpg’s and ran across the phase spider and bingo, there was the inspiration. If it was weirdly cute or colourful I knew I’d be all right. A phase spider is a large monstrosity and possesses the magical ability to phase in and out of our plane of existence. It seems to appear out of nowhere and quickly vanishes after attacking. It’s bite is poisonous.
The mini was base coated with black and grey acrylic primers, and then I used a variety of effects and products including dry brushing, stippling and adding pigments to create the effect on the base/ground of a sort of grey stone with green mossy sections and some rust and brown pigments to provide depths and show areas where dirt may naturally accumulate. I then brought up the colour on the phase spider itself and decided on white/blue/pink as the colouring.
Most phase spider images I’ve seen all have white as the main or base colour, most also have some amount of blue, some pink. In this case the pink was mostly because I bought some new glow pigments from Culture Hustle and wanted to try this pink one out on something, the phase spider with magical abilities seemed a natural fit for it. The white was added in thin layers to build it up to the whitest and brightest where the light would naturally hit it the most and then purples/blues glazed into the shadows and the “teeth” were also done in blues.
I mixed a pink glow pigment into some glaze and began adding it to the mini. A thin base coat of glow pigment was added to the majority of the spider so the whole thing would glow at least a little. Then I built the pigment up into the areas where I wanted to add both more glow and more colour.
The black eyes were done with a combination of black paint and micro-markers with a small dot of white here and there to reflect light and bring up some highlights.
(Your purchase includes the Hand-painted Miniature figurine of the giant spider on base only. Other items in photos are for display purposes.)
